Healthy South Indian Style Buttermilk / Spicy Butter milk !!

  Perfect summer refreshing beverage “Spicy Buttermilk”. I love homemade buttermilk, because it can be prepared according to our wish by giving many flavors to it. This recipe goes well with both spicy & sweet by adding fresh fruits / vegetables / spices, which is really refreshing & healthy too. For example, the green chili helps to boost our metabolic rate & cools the body, ginger & cumin powder helps for digestion, mint & cilantro gives flavor to the drink and fenugreek helps to regulate blood sugar level in our body. It’s a healthy & low fat drink, in India the buttermilk served in the clay pot, which is a natural way of life. 

Homemade yogurt / curd – ½ cup
Ginger – 1 small piece
Green chili – 1 small
Cumin seeds / jeera – ½ tsp
Fenugreek powder – ½ tsp
Cilantro – 3 strands
Mint – 1 strand
Water – 1 cup (240 ml)
Salt to taste


  • In a blender, add all the ingredients given above, blend altogether by adding generous amount of water.
  • Add salt to taste & filter the residue by using strainer.
  • Before serving refrigerate the buttermilk for 10 minutes.
  • Serve chill & enjoy it !!
